Parenting Your Teen Through the Turbulence – Pt 2

In Part 2 of this series, I begin by raising the same question that appears at the end of Part 1.

Why do teenagers think and behave the way they do?

If I had a Crystal Ball, I would spout off answers at the speed of light. But without the Ball and the Light show, I turn to science and medicine.

So in a word, the answer to the question is:  It’s a Brain thing!

This may surprise you, but brain development experts, child psychologists and medical doctors all pretty much agree on three facts about teenagers. read more …

Parenting Your Teen Through the Turbulence – Pt 1

Did I hear you say you’re fed up with your teenager?  Has he or she gotten all over your one LAST nerve?  Perhaps you’re too ashamed to admit it  … but you’ve just about run out of patience.

Hi, this is Sheila and here’s what I know for sure.

If you are the parent of a teenager and you are NOT experiencing some level of Turbulence in your relationship with your son or daughter … you are very very very fortunate. Perhaps your teenager is a model student and a respectful family member who is still eager to please you. That would be GREAT news!

But if all that sounds foreign to you … don’t freak out! That just means you are part of a very large group of parents who are raising teenagers … and having “mostly normal” experiences with their sons or daughters. Some of those experiences may be alarming at times, but they are “mostly normal”according to the experts. read more …

When Parenting Teenagers … Expect “Change!”

What’s the good news about parenting a teenager? If you’re raising a teenager NOW, you’re probably struggling with trying to come up with a positive response to my question. If you’re parenting your son or daughter through the “Turbulent Teen Years” … you may not be able to answer the question at all.

I urge you NOT to despair – no matter how challenging things are at the moment. Here’s one piece of good news:

Time does NOT stand still. The challenge you’re dealing with now will eventually end. And something else will take its place. The new challenge will give you other things to focus on – some good, some not so good. That’s Life! read more …

Relax, Take a Breath and Lean In!

Relax… Take a Breath… and Lean In!

Hello, this is Sheila LyonHall and I am delighted that you’ve come for a nibble on The Parental Grapevine.”  This is where I share my thoughts with parents who are raising teenagers.  Most of those thoughts are based on Transformational Parenting Practices designed to help parents Connect or Reconnect and Strengthen the bond with their teenager.  I call it a “Sacred Bond” because I believe raising children, and teenagers in particular, is a Sacred Trust and every bit a Divine Selection.  How else can we rationalize “Why?” we have the sons and daughters we have.

Now before some of you start heading for the nearest Exit because this post is already beginning to sound too spiritual …  let me assure you that I will not be force-feeding you Scriptures or shaking my finger in your face.  That ain’t happening here ’cause that’s NOT who I am.  And if you stick around, I promise it will be worth your while as the Parent of a teenager.

For Your Convenience …

I know you noticed the Audio Player above.  You may even have already turned it on.  Not every post has a recording.  When you see one, you should know that what you will hear is essentially what you will read … with only minor differences.  The audio version is there for your convenience.  I know how busy parents of teenagers are and I don’t want you to spend unnecessary time “reading” when you can “listen” and get the same benefit.  The audio is a bit more casual and laid back and you’ll get to hear me “Smile” occasionally.  But both versions basically carry the same message. read more …
